During halftime of the William M. Raines High School Homecoming Game, the school paused to surprise Mr. KuRonde' Washington with the prestigious Award of Merit. This fall is Mr. Washington's 10th year as Director of Bands at William M. Raines High School. The presentation climaxed with a personal note from the founder of the Raines Band Julian E. White being read over the public address system. KuRonde' Washington is now the 2nd longest tenured band director in the history of Raines!
Mr. Washington is a native of Daytona Beach, Florida where he graduated from Mainland High School. While a student at Mainland Washington served as the Trumpet Section Leader in the band program. He went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music Education from Bethune- Cookman University (BCU) studying under Mr. Donovan V. Wells, Mr. James Poitier & Mr. Pedro Orey. While a student at BCU Washington was a member of the trumpet section in the 325 member marching band known as "The Pride".
He received the baton as Director of Bands at William M. Raines High School in the fall of 2009. Mr. Washington’s tireless efforts since that time have been successful musically and academically for our band and students. He has recruited musicians & worked to improve the bands facilities. The band has also grown numerically but most importantly the sound and quality of the band has improved. In his first year directing the band at the Florida Band Masters Association’s District Competition the concert band received an “Excellent” rating. This was a major accomplishment as the concert band had not been rated in 15 years! After the excellent rating numerous "Superior" ratings at the Florida Bandmasters Association Solo and Ensemble Evaluation followed.
The Viking band has taking home first place trophies in several battle of the bands, performed at Bethune-Cookman University Homecoming, participated in several parades & been featured in a national recording artist music video just to name a few.
In 2016 Mr. Washington lead and completed a successful new uniform campaign drive. On completion of the campaign several thousand dollars were raised and the band was able to contribute to the purchase of new uniforms. This purchase replaced the 14 year old uniforms that the band had been using.
However his most important accomplishment is many of his students have received music & academic scholarships to colleges and universities around the country. Many of them surprised him on the field during the presentation.
Mr. Washington continues to build upon the Viking Band legacy and we look forward to his great leadership for years to come. Congratulations on 10 years of dedicated service to William M. Raines High School.
